We’re excited to share a special opportunity with the theater community. On May 17, the Fox Valley Folklore Society hosts Jasmin Cardenas—WorkersTEATRO: Applying Theater to the Fight for Workers’ Rights. Discover how storytelling, theater and performance can ignite change. This unique workshop blends dramatic techniques with activism, empowering participants to give voice to workplace struggles. Lead by award winning storyteller & arts educator Jasmin Cardenas, storytelling, theater, movement, and real-life moments come together in an engaging and lively way. You’ll explore stories inspired by workers across Chicagoland—brought to life through interactive scenes, creative expression, and shared energy in the room. Jasmin Cardenas’ international reputation as a storyteller and teaching artist provides an accessible entry point for individuals and organizations seeking tools to engage communities in dialogue and action. Come and get a taste of a technique called Theater of the Oppressed, developed by Jasmin's teacher Augusto Boal. This program blends lecture and interactive workshop activities—plan on participatory movement and fun. Dress comfortably to move as you are able. Participants will learn practical skills and techniques and collectively create scenes based on shared social concerns to experience ways to build and amplify community voices. Join us to learn creative strategies for inspiring solidarity and driving impactful action.
